The Spring & The Streams

Sep 7, 2026

Go with the flow
No more holding on
Release, let go and surrender
Her waters will carry you to the ocean
Deep within your heart you'll remember

[Refrain]

We are made of water, like the river we know
How to release our fears and let go
We are made of water, like the river we know
How to trust that our path brings us home

Yemanja, Mamãe Oxum
Yemanja, Mamãe Oxum

[Two female deities in the Yoruba religion]

See how she goes the way of least resistance
See how she moves with the land
Carving her path with a heart of forgiveness
Acceptance and compassion

...

I receive your messages into my being
I learn to listen, I pray to heal
I return and I welcome back all of me
I am whole, I am complete and I am free like water
I am free like water [repeat]

Like water [repeat]

We return to the Ocean like water [repeat]
We return to the Ocean like water
We return to the Ocean like water
We return to the Ocean like water

Like water [repeat]

Though our bodies are dying, our spirits
are being renewed each day.
- Christian Scripture

I am a crazy vagabond.
My cupped hands stretch out
hungry to see you.
I beg at your gate, day after day.

Guru Nanak. Poems from the Sikh Sacred Tradition. Trans. Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh.

Thomas Merton, "spring... and stream"

spring
Source

first

stream
flow

second

one Water

both

Yes -
"Spring" then "stream"
"Source" then "i"

dawn before full sun
a seed before a tree
a Spring before a you

mind
think think think

speech
talk talk talk

body
do do do

- all derivatives -

(what are those streams running away from...
the Headwaters, even in doing good,
trying to escape?...
but the Waters are the same,
the union cannot be broken,
one cannot escape It is-I am)

people
go go go
thinking talking doing
restless, exhausted, afraid of the Quiet

(the Quiet restores, gives Life,
and Quiet is more than being quiet)

busyness, talkativeness, do-goodism justified with
"I must," I have to," "I don't have time" -
a well-proven way to hide...
from ourselves...

without drawing life - liveliness -
from the Headwaters
of Living (Life-Giving) Waters...

if not from the Headwaters -
how can parched streambeds share
the refreshing, revivifying Life people
are so thirsty for... even if they
do not know what they are thirsty for?

Jesus...
"I have come that they might have life..."
is more than what most mean by being alive

(there is a life before lives,
you, me)

(the great Paths have said,
dead people are walking about everywhere -
but what is this "dead"?)

breathing in
inspiration - in-spiriting -
meeting with, imbibing, loving Spirit-Beloved

breathing out
expiration - out-spiriting -
sharing, spreading, shining with Spirit-Light

mind, body, speech
means of expiration

how shall we share Spirit
unless joining with

(a light disconnected from its energy-source
does not shine... we cannot shine of ourselves)

one returns to the Heart to share
what is of the Heart

(not merely what is of the self)

if we do not breathe in, we perish,
having no breath to breathe out

(what dies when we think, talk, and do
but have lost connection with the Breath?)

daily drawing from the Otherness
freshness, aliveness, generosity
naturally, spontaneously flow

you do not have to ask,
"How shall I bless others?,"
you will be blessing

presence, even without
thinking... saying... doing anything,
is a channel for the Blessing to flow

(but you'll not take the credit
no one possesses the Water)

no, it is not wrong not to connect
with the Source
we can choose to ignore, to disbelieve, delay

but one thing I've learned over time,
people need more than just "Brian" -
More

I can be a hand that gives
but I'm not the one opening the hand
or the gift given

we are spirit
of Spirit
to flow...
our hands to be hands of Light
giving

We need means to connect and commune daily, consciously, with our Source. We will come to different means for doing this. People find their means, sometimes through different traditions, sometimes from a single one. And the means may change over time- as has been the case with me. These "tools," as the abbot Benedict called them in his Rule, are means for remembrance, revivification, and healing.

Very little in our modern societies encourages us in this way. Secularism has swallowed up the spirit of Spirit. Stuff has pushed aside the Other. We must aspire and act with a firm resolve to thrive spiritually.

Using the tools is self-care for others and ourselves. What we do is not only for ourselves, but for the whole.
